Tuckean Acid Sulfate Soils Rehabilitation Project

Water Quality Monitoring

The Tuckean Acid Sulfate Rehabilitation Project aims to improve the quality of water discharge from agricultural areas affected by the presence of acid sulfate soils. These soils may cause run off water to be of low pH ( < 3.0 ) for extended time periods after rain events. The low pH levels of the discharge water may cause death of fish and esturarine crustacea.

EIT provided two continous water quality monitoring stations which measure water pH, depth, EC and temperature. These stations are providing the baseline data for water quality. The Tuckean Landcare Group is undertaking land rehabilitation and agricultural management practices with the aim to improving the quality of water run-off for the benefit of local and downstream habitats.

Two stations have been established approximately 1.0 km apart. The stations are linked via EIT radio technology to provide one continuous data recording platform. Information collected by the base station data recorder is automatically uploaded to remote PC via the digital telephone network ( GSM ).

Both water quality stations are powered by 4 watt solar panels and rechargeable batteries. Real time information can be viewed at any time using the EIT data recorder software.
